Object: some rubber bands, candy to pass out to the children
Good morning, boys and girls. Today we are going to have some real fun and also find out something about ourselves and why we need Jesus. I brought along some rubber bands that I want to share with you this morning. As a matter of fact, we are going to have target practice, and to the one who hits the target I will give a piece of delicious candy. How many want to try to hit the target? (let them all volunteer) I brought along enough rubber bands for everyone to try at least once and maybe more. Our target is the ceiling of the church. Now let me show you how to shoot the rubber bands. (put the rubber band on your finger and shoot it in some direction other than the ceiling)
Now, when I count three we will fire at the ceiling. One, two, and three. Fire. Who hit the ceiling? Did anyone hit the ceiling? (let them answer) You all fell short of hitting the ceiling. Would you like to try again? Remember, there is some delicious candy waiting for you if you hit the ceiling. (have everyone armed with a rubber band and when you give the count, let them fire) Everyone fell short again. Not one of you were able to hit the ceiling with your second try. You all fell short.
But don't feel bad. Let me tell you why we tried this experiment. Shooting rubber bands at the ceiling is like trying to live the perfect life. You can't do it. Everyone sins, and when we sin we do not live a perfect life. Only one person ever lived and did not sin. His name is Jesus. Everyone else has failed and fallen short of the perfect life. If we had to live a perfect life to get to heaven, where we will live with God, then no one would ever make it. The Bible says that we can never make it by ourselves. The only way that we will ever make it to heaven is if God helps us. God forgives our sins and loves us so much that he does it all for us so that we can live here on earth without a lot of worry and fretting. You don't have to worry about being a friend of God if you love him and trust him. God promises all of us who fall short that he will take care of us.
It is like getting the candy even when you are short on your shot. I am going to give you the candy I promised even though you didn't hit the ceiling, so that you will remember that even when we fail to be perfect, God still loves us enough to share his world with everyone who loves and trusts in him. (pass out the candy)
The next time you try to shoot a rubber band and you miss the mark, think about how much God loves you. When you think about that, you will remember how he forgives you when you ask for it and how he shares his world with all who believe in him.
