Object:
I know that I will remain and continue with all of you for your progress and joy in faith....
-- Philippians 1:25
Paul struggled with his reason for living. Death was not a fearful thing for him but rather an appealing completion of his faith journey. "For to me, living is Christ and dying is gain." The reason for living was not a selfish clinging to life but rather an acknowledgment that God could use him to contribute to the journey of faith of others. His joy of life was found in the way that God enabled him to be a means by which others could mature in the faith. "... To remain in the flesh is more necessary for you." There are times when any clergy person can grow weary with all of the struggles of ministry. There are times when any Christian can grow weary with trying to live a life of integrity within the context of the temptation of life. Sometimes when we are confronted with the possibility of death and survive, we discover that we do not fear death. We also believe that all the struggles in our life and ministry have value if we can believe that God is using our efforts for a greater purpose. It is immensely satisfying and refreshing when we glimpse how our efforts have made life better for someone else. Even when we feel inadequate in the demonstration of our faith, we are encouraged when we are allowed to understand how God can use our efforts to build up someone else. It is at those moments that we experience "the privilege of not only believing in Christ, but of suffering for him as well...."
