Lovers of darkness, lovers of light
Prayer
Contemporary Lectionary Prayers
Cycle B
Gospel Note:
The challenge here is to set a most familiar and beloved New
Testament verse (3:16) into its proper textual context, which is
a matter of life and judgment, light and darkness. It should be
noticed, too, that what precedes and follows verse 16 at least
suggests a non-Pauline understanding of belief as something
humanly generated as a response to Christ's Passion rather than
divinely given in that event.
Liturgical Color:
Purple
Suggested Hymns:
On My Heart Imprint Your Image
Amazing Grace, How Sweet The Sound
Deep Were His Wounds
O Christ, Our King, Creator, Lord
Wide Open Are Your Hands
Give To Our God Immortal Praise
Lent 4
Gracious Lord God, sometimes we distort your
best intentions for us.
We are like the Israelites, who complained
loudly so that they would not have to listen.
Not enough food,
not enough water ...
We complain that there is too much pain in life,
too much struggling and difficulty.
If you love us Lord,
why don't you make it better?
Perhaps we behave this way because it is hard
for us to comprehend the fact that your intention
for us is good.
We blame you for our struggles,
and this is wrong.
We prefer our darkness rather than your light.
Increase our faith, Lord, so that we face our
struggles secure in the knowledge that you are
with us.
Stop us when we loudly complain, so that we will
be able to hear your word and truly listen.
Help us to welcome your light when it shines upon
us rather than to turn away in fear.
Amen.
