The triumphant tragedy of the cross
Prayer
Contemporary Lectionary Prayers
Cycle B
Gospel Note:
More than the Synoptic accounts, John consistently views the
c7ross primarily as a glorious event of exaltation. In his
version of the Passion here, he underscores that perspective with
his detail about the kingship of this crucified one, and with his
report of Jesus' final words -- "It is accomplished!" -- which
signal, not resignation, but triumph.
Liturgical Color:
Black or no paraments
Suggested Hymns:
Deep Were His Wounds
O Sacred Head Now Wounded
Sing, My Tongue
