Gospel Note:
In a narrative that intentionally describes appearances of the
risen Christ as both spiritual and tangible, John apparently
directs his account of Thomas to the issue of doubt among
Christian contemporaries who are increasingly removed from the
eyewitnesses. The incident is notable in that Jesus does not
criticize or stifle the doubt of Thomas, but simply overcomes it
with irrefutable evidence.

Thomas felt cheated.
The others had seen the risen Lord and
he had missed out!
The thought of what could have been was too
painful for him to consider!
Resentment and anger overwhelmed him.
He reacted poorly.
Lord, you know what we are like when we feel like
we have missed out on something really important.
You know how cornered we feel when we are pressed
on all sides by conflicting interests and clashing
personalities.
Sometimes,
we permit our doubts to override our faith.
We tend to overreact and we cut ourselves off
from you and from those we love.
Lord, help us to doubt our doubts.
And when we are feeling overwhelmed, give us the
wisdom to remember where to turn for guidance.
In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray.
