A GOSPEL TREASURY
Poems Based on Lectionary Gospels
Love God and love your neighbor.'
How simple it would seem
if not for just two problems.
And therein lies my theme.
For loving One so powerful,
with jurisdiction here,
Whose judgment holds my life in hand,
could plainly turn to fear.
To love my neighbor could become
more easy than it is
if he were just more lovable
and saintliness were his.
And then, to make it harder,
when my neighbor comes to view:
the God who says he loves me so,
he loves my neighbor too.
How lucky is my neighbor
His instructions from above:
to love the Lord and also,
I’m the neighbor he’s to love.
I guess I’m sort of lucky too.
’Cause what is known to me,
I’ll try to hide from him
that I’m as hard to love as he!
How simple it would seem

And therein lies my theme.
For loving One so powerful,
