A GOSPEL TREASURY
Poems Based on Lectionary Gospels
Hello, my friend, you really look down
with your back all bent and face in a frown.
That cross that you carry is really a load.
You’re not making much progress along the road.
And what is this burden upon my back?
It feels so heavy, my back may crack.
Sometimes I think 1 can hardly move.
I struggle along. But what do I prove?
What’s that, you say? Will I give you a hand
when I’m so weighted down I can hardly stand?
And you don’t need help as badly as I.
But if you’ll help me, let’s give it a try.
O my! That’s better. My strength is back.
How are you so strong as to lift my pack?
Look. Now I can stand with my back up straight
and, to tell the truth, I feel just great.
And that burden you carry seems lighter, my friend.
Though it still looks heavy, you hardly bend.
You stand so straight and walk so tall,
One would hardly notice your cross at all.
And isn’t it strange how that worked out?
When we help each other, we both feel stout
as though we got help when our backs were sore
from Someone who’s carried a cross before.
with your back all bent and face in a frown.
That cross that you carry is really a load.
You’re not making much progress along the road.
And what is this burden upon my back?
It feels so heavy, my back may crack.
Sometimes I think 1 can hardly move.
