STORYTELLER: (ENTERS WITH LAMBY, FLEECY, AND WOOLY FOLLOWING) Come along now. It's time for bed.
LAMBY: Will you tell us a bedtime story?
FLEECY: Please tell us a bedtime story.
STORYTELLER: All right. All right. I'll tell you a story. Which one?
WOOLY: Tell us about "The Three Little Sheep."
FLEECY: Yes, yes, "The Three Little Sheep."
LAMBY: Yes, please tell us that one.
STORYTELLER: (FEIGNING IGNORANCE) I don't know that one.
FLEECY: Yes, you do.
LAMBY: Sure, you know it.
WOOLY: Tell us. Tell us.
FLEECY: "The Three Little Sheep." Tell us. Tell us.
LAMBY: Please. Please. Please.
STORYTELLER: I don't remember. How does it go?
LAMBY: You remember.
WOOLY: Tell us. Tell us.
FLEECY: Once upon a time ...
STORYTELLER: Once upon a time ...
LAMBY: There were three little sheep ...
STORYTELLER: Oh, I do remember now. Let's see, what were their names?
WOOLY: "Wooly."
FLEECY: "Fleecy."
LAMBY: And "Lamby."
STORYTELLER: That's right. (LOVINGLY TOUCHING THE HEAD OF EACH ONE AS HE SAYS THEIR NAMES) Wooly, Fleecy, and Lamby. And they were good little lambs. (THE SHEEP ACT OUT WHAT STORYTELLER TELLS) Every day the shepherd would lead them to a pasture full of juicy grass and watch them as they filled their little sheep tummys.
But one day as Wooly, Fleecy, and Lamby were eating the juicy grass, they wandered far from the other sheep and it was getting late in the day and they all began to feel afraid.
FLEECY: What will we do?
LAMBY: I think we're lost.
WOOLY: I'm afraid.
STORYTELLER: ... they said. They began to cry softly because they thought the mean old wolf would sneak up on them and eat them. They huddled together for comfort.
LAMBY: I'm not very comforted.
STORYTELLER: ... said Lamby.
WOOLY: Just because we're together like this won't help if the mean old wolf comes.
STORYTELLER: ... Wooly whined.
FLEECY: I wish our master was here.
STORYTELLER: ... Fleecy added with a whimper. (FLEECY WHIMPERS) And then, they all heard something in the forest. Something big was making a lot of noise and coming through the underbrush.
LAMBY: Oh, no! It's the wolf!
STORYTELLER: ... Lamby said, huddling closer to the other two.
WOOLY: I'm getting out of here.
STORYTELLER: ... screamed Wooly, as he broke into a wobbly trot.
FLEECY: Wait, wait for us.
STORYTELLER: ... yelled Fleecy, as he and Lamby followed Wooly as fast as their little lamb legs could carry them. (WOLFEN ENTERS, GROWLS, AND CHASES THE LAMBS)
And indeed it was the wolf, and he was running after them. As they glanced back they knew he was gaining on them. They knew that he soon would catch them and eat them.
WOLFEN: Aha, I will soon catch you and eat you!
STORYTELLER: The wolf was a blur of black and gray matted fur and his ghastly red tongue was licking his slobbering lips.
LAMBY: C'mon! Run! Run!
STORYTELLER: ... Lamby yelled.
WOOLY: I can't run any faster.
STORYTELLER: ... screamed Wooly.
FLEECY: Oh, no!
STORYTELLER: And then, when the wolf was about to reach out and grab Fleecy, Fleecy twisted his ankle in a hole and fell.
FLEECY: Oh, no!
STORYTELLER: ... screamed Fleecy. The wolf could taste leg of lamb.
WOLFEN: Mmmm. Leg of lamb! (WOLFEN GRABS FLEECY)
STORYTELLER: Lamby heard Fleecy's screams and stopped.
LAMBY: It's Fleecy! The wolf has Fleecy!
STORYTELLER: ... screamed Lamby.
LAMBY: We have to help Fleecy!
STORYTELLER: But the wolf already had Fleecy and was dragging the frightened lamb back to his lair.
LAMBY: It's no use.
STORYTELLER: ... cried Lamby.
LAMBY: We could never get Fleecy away from the wolf. We'd just get caught ourselves.
WOOLY: But we have to try.
STORYTELLER: ... said Wooly.
WOOLY: We have to. He's our brother.
STORYTELLER: So, Wooly and Lamby ran back to where the wolf had caught Fleecy. There was blood on the ground but no wolf and no Fleecy.
LAMBY: Fleecy's gone.
STORYTELLER: ... cried Lamby.
LAMBY: We'll never see him again.
STORYTELLER: And Wooly and Lamby held each other and cried. (LAMBY AND WOOLY CRY) And cried. And cried some more. For they had lost their brother. And that's the end of the story. A very sad ...
WOOLY: No! No!
LAMBY: That's not the way the story ends.
STORYTELLER: It's not?
LAMBY: No. Remember? The shepherd comes to help.
WOOLY: Yes, yes, the good shepherd.
STORYTELLER: And who is the good shepherd?
WOOLY AND LAMBY: You are!
STORYTELLER: I am?
LAMBY: Yes. You come ...
WOOLY: ... and rescue Fleecy.
STORYTELLER: Oh, yes. I seem to remember now.
WOOLY: So, Wooly and Lamby ran back to where the wolf had caught Fleecy.
STORYTELLER: So, Wooly and Lamby ran back to where the wolf had caught Fleecy. There was blood on the ground but no wolf and no Fleecy. And Wooly and Lamby held each other and cried. (LAMBY AND WOOLY CRY) And cried. And cried some more. For they had lost their brother. And then the shepherd came.
LAMBY: The good shepherd.
STORYTELLER: And then the good shepherd came and comforted Lamby and Wooly, and said, "I am the good shepherd; and I know my sheep, and you know me, don't you?"
LAMBY AND WOOLY: We know you. You're the good shepherd.
STORYTELLER: And the good shepherd followed the tracks of the wolf and came upon him while he was in his lair. He was about to eat Fleecy. And the good shepherd killed the mean wolf and rescued Fleecy.
WOOLY: Yea!
LAMBY: Yea!
FLEECY: Really, really yea!
STORYTELLER: And so Fleecy was hugged a lot and loved a lot because he was back with his brothers and the mean old wolf was dead.
LAMBY AND WOLLY AND FLEECY: Yea! Yea!
STORYTELLER: And now you've had your story. Now it's time for bed.
WOOLY AND LAMBY AND FLEECY: All right.
STORYTELLER: So, what did you learn from the story?
LAMBY: I don't know.
WOOLY: Uh, I don't know either.
FLEECY: I don't know. Maybe I ought to run faster.
STORYTELLER: Well, maybe you aren't supposed to learn anything. After all, you're just lambs. Just be lambs and enjoy the story.
LAMBY AND WOOLY AND FLEECY: And know your shepherd.
STORYTELLER: Yes, and know your shepherd.
LAMBY AND WOOLY AND FLEECY: The good shepherd.
