At the funeral of famous Senator Barry Goldwater, broadcast live on the PBS public television, the brother of Barry told this true story:
The Goldwater family owned a department store in Phoenix, Arizona, and both of the brothers worked there.
Maybe you will remember when department stores had a central office. At each department sales desk there would be a cage containing conveyers in which the money of a sale would be placed with the bill. Then it was drawn through a vacuum tube to the central office. Once received there, a receipt would be returned by a reverse process to the sales desk.
One day, the brother observed Barry walking cautiously through an aisle. Suddenly he stooped down, grabbed a mouse by the tail, took it to the nearest sales desk, put it in a conveyor, and sent it to the financial office! You can guess the remainder of the story.
The description by Barry's brother was hilarious, and those present for the funeral had a good laugh.
And I think Barry would have had fun, too, if he could have attended that funeral service.
