The Baptism of Our Lord
Preaching
Lectionary Preaching Workbook
Series III
Some times the Baptism of our Lord, or the First Sunday after the Epiphany, functions as the octave of Epiphany. The Epiphany motif is proclaimed once more on this Sunday to make a theological, rather than an historical, statement. Jesus is identified by God as his Son when he is baptized by John in the Jordan, thereby adding another dimension to the evidence of his identity in the birth narratives of Luke and Matthew.
