Communion Prayers for the Church Year and Pastoral Occasions
Object:
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give God thanks and praise.
We do give you thanks and praise, eternal God, for your son Jesus Christ,
the baby born in the humble stable,
the child who grew in wisdom and stature,
the Messiah who shared the good news of your love,
the good shepherd who called people to know their God,
the Savior who died upon the cross for our sins,
the Christ who rose from the grave to reign as our Lord forever.
Through Jesus Christ you have opened for us the way to salvation, shown us the truth of your love, and promised us eternal life.
We thank you, gracious God, that you have chosen us to be Christ's people. Through your Son you have made us a holy church -- blessed to know the truth of the gospel and commissioned to share that truth with the world.
We thank you, almighty God, that you have sent us out into the world as apostles bearing Christ's message.
Your word proclaimed by the church challenges us to boldly live the justice and mercy of your kingdom.
Your people of faith working through the church move us to share the gospel through word, song, prayer, and action.
Your Holy Spirit moving within the church inspires us to profess the salvation and hope of Jesus Christ.
For as the people of the crucified and risen Christ, we gather in faith before this meal of bread and wine.
In the name of Jesus Christ, who died and was broken on the cross for the redemption of sins, we break this bread and remember his words:
"This is my body broken for you."
In the name of Jesus Christ, who rose from the grave to shatter the powers of sin and death, we drink from this cup and proclaim his words:
"This is the new covenant which God makes in my blood."
We eat the bread of life and drink from the cup of salvation remembering the life of Christ and the mystery of our faith.
"Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again."
Almighty God, send your Holy Spirit, we pray, upon these gifts of bread and cup, that through them we might see and hear and taste and know again the truth of Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
And also with you.
