Dear Concerned And Loving One:
Help us in our troubled understanding of Jesus. We doubt not that he was truly your offspring, all that a son should be. We admire and love him for the wonderful human being he was. But in what sense was he different from the rest of us? Was it an absolute difference, or only a difference in degree? We are aware of the record that tells us we too are your children and can become joint heirs with him in your favor and grace.
We understand him as human. But how shall we interpret his divinity? Was he divine in some mystical, supernatural way? Or shall we think of him as one who gave complete freedom to the divine in himself which exists as presence and potential in every person?
We know that Jesus loved us and gave himself for us. It was a wonderful act of saving grace. Nothing could have been a more perfect expression of the divine love that was in him. But was this a noble human act or a mystical, supernatural act, manifesting your purpose for our redemption?
We want to know Jesus better and to know you better through him. Please guide us in our quest.
We are so glad that he habitually identified himself as the "Son of Man." Was he not as truly a revelation of ourselves to us as he was of you?
In his name, Amen.
