Discussion Questions On Anointing For Study Groups

The Ministry Of Anointing
1.
Read the text from James 5:13-16 aloud. If you had no prior experience with the anointing service, what assumptions would you make about the ordinance?
2.
Share with the group instances in which you yourself have been anointed, if any. What were the circumstances? What prompted you to seek anointing? Did you have the idea, or did someone else? What were you praying for? What was the outcome? Would you recommend anointing for others?
3.
Share with the group instances in which you were a participant in an anointing, not the person who was being anointed. How did it come about that you became involved? What were your feelings about the event?
4.
What meaning do you give to the words "cure" and "heal"? Is there a difference, in your opinion?
5.
What is the significance of anointing for your congregation? Do you think it is overemphasized? Underemphasized?
6.
Under what circumstances do you think anointing is appropriate?
7.
Is anointing appropriate in end-of-life situations when recovery is either unlikely or even not
desired?
8.
Reflect on those occasions when you have felt an anointing would have been appropriate but you felt uncomfortable asking for an anointing, or asking another if they would like to be anointed. If possible, share these with the group.
