A Hymn Service Of Words On Love For Valentine's Day Or Family Day
This hymn service and story is about the love of God and how two strangers become friends and find that love. It is ideal for Valentine's Day, but will be appropriate for any time of the year when love is the theme.
Quoted scriptures are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. Any other version may be substituted.
For visual enhancement, many different-sized hearts may be arranged on the altar.
A large heart may be drawn on a sheet of poster board and divided like a puzzle. Another heart of the same size can be made from either newsprint or drawing paper. Pieces to match the drawing on the puzzle are cut out earlier and pasted to the poster board after each hymn, so that at the conclusion of the service, the heart will be complete. The cutout pieces may be either colored or made from colored paper. An alternative would be to use a red marker and color the puzzle sections on the poster board. This is optional.

In Search Of Love
The Story
Part 1
Narrator: Amor Re Neum was a shy little boy who lived alone on the side of a mountain. Amor liked to sit on his step at night and talk to the stars, while they twinkled and played tag with the clouds. He talked to Chester, his white cat. And, sometimes, Chester talked to him, but it was hard to understand the cat's language. Amor felt something was missing from his life. He saw other children in the valley laughing and running. He tried it. It was fun, but something was still missing. Then one day, a stranger came by.
Stranger: Hi, I'm looking for love. Do you know where I can find it?
Amor: What is love?
Stranger: I don't know. The Holy Man who visited our village sent me to find it.
Amor: What does it look like?
Stranger: I don't know. I don't know why I have to look for something I've never seen.
Amor: Why do you need it?
Stranger: They won't let me back into the village without it.
Amor: Why?
Stranger: I don't know. I didn't do anything. Well ... maybe I did kick a few people and hit a couple of kids. Anyway, I must move on in search of love. Would you like to come with me? I promise I won't kick you.
Amor: What's a promise?
Stranger: The Holy Man said it meant that if I say I won't do something, then I won't; or if I say I will do something, then I will. He said there's a book full of them.
Amor: Then if we find that book of promises, I bet we can find love.
Stranger: Maybe you're right. Let's go.
Narrator: And together they went off in search of the book of promises.
Hymn
"Standing On The Promises"
The Story
Part 2
Narrator: Amor and the stranger continued on their search.
Amor: My grandmother used to say, "I lift up my eyes to the hills -- from where will my help come?" (Psalm 121:1).
Stranger: What does that mean?
Amor: I don't know exactly, but it always seemed like it really helped her. Maybe if we climb to the top of the mountain, we can find that help, too.
Stranger: All right. Let's go.
Narrator: They climbed to the top of a great hill. All they found were trees, stones, bushes, and small animals. Someone had written something on a large boulder.
Stranger: What does it say?
Amor: It says, "God's love is perfect."
Stranger: Maybe we need to find this God and ask where we can find love.
Hymn
"O Perfect Love"
The Story
Part 3
Narrator: Amor and the stranger wandered down the side of the mountain, still in search of love -- the stranger because he had to find it before he could go home, and Amor because he felt something missing in his life and thought that love might be it. They were tired. It was late.
Amor: Maybe we should find a place to sleep for the night. I know a safe pace and I know where some good berries are.
Narrator: They came to the berry patch and enjoyed them.
Amor: Come on, we can sleep over here.
Stranger: But ... but ... that's a graveyard!
Amor: What's that?
Stranger: Don't you know anything? It's a place where dead folks are buried.
Amor: Oh. I like to come here and talk to the stones.
Stranger: Do you talk to everything?
Amor: Well, they talk to me.
Stranger: What do you mean, they talk to you?
Amor: See the words on those stones. They tell me things. Like this one. It talks about the God of love again. See, it says, "God of our Fathers leads us with divine love."
Hymn
"God Of Our Fathers"
The Story
Part 4
Narrator: The sun peeked through the branches of the trees, coaxing the two to get up and be on their way. Everything was fresh and the smell of honeysuckle was in the air.
Amor: Listen! They're singing about love.
Stranger: Who's singing?
Amor: The birds. Hear them singing about the newness of morning?
Stranger: You're weird. They're just birds. No one can understand birds.
Amor: Oh, I thought sure ... yes, I did. There it is again. They are singing about this morning being like the first morning.
Hymn
"Morning Has Broken"
The Story
Part 5
Narrator: Amor skipped on the way, whistling the tune he had heard the birds singing.
Stranger: Will you stop that! Stones talking; birds singing. Next you'll be telling me you see dancing bears and flying kangaroos.
Amor: Well, you would hear them, too, if you would stop your grumbling long enough to listen.
(Pause)
Stranger: Now what're you listening to? More birds?
Amor: No, don't you hear the fields and forests, vale and mountain, all calling us to rejoice? Don't you hear it? Doesn't it make you want to sing?
Hymn
"Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee"
The Story
Part 6
Stranger: I'm not sure I should have asked you to come with me. We're searching for love and you keep hearing birds sing and mountains and streams talking to you and reading stuff I don't even see. Why? Why are you so different?
Amor: I don't know. It's just that they're there. I remember my grandmother saying things like, "I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart ..." (Psalm 9:1), and "The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims his handiwork ..." (Psalm 19:1).
Stranger: Who is this God you talk about? Maybe he can show us where to find love.
Amor: I don't know where he is. My grandmother was taken away before I was old enough for her to tell me. I remember her saying something about a man named Jesus ... he has something to do with it, but I'm not sure what.
Stranger: How do you know so much and still not know anything important? If you were so young, how come you remember so much? How did your grandmother tell you these things?
Amor: She sang to me a lot. I remember her singing and singing and singing. Always with a song, she told me about God and creation and Jesus. But I can't remember it all.
Hymn
"For The Beauty Of The Earth"
The Story
Part 7
Stranger: Well, come on. We've dallied here long enough. We must move on if we're going to find love.
Amor: Maybe if we could find Jesus, he could show us where to find love.
Stranger: Maybe, but where do you find him?
Amor: Look! There are some folks coming down the mountain. They look happy and they're singing. Maybe they know where we can find Jesus.
Stranger: Excuse us, but you look so happy. Would you know where we can find love?
Newcomer: Oh, yes, Jesus is love. He can show you the way, the truth, and the life. Just open your eyes. You will see.
Hymn
"Open My Eyes, That I May See"
The Story
Part 8
Amor: Now I remember! I remember my grandmother telling me about love. I remember her saying the book of promises you talked about said, "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish, but may have everlasting life" (John 3:16).
Stranger: You mean this Jesus is the love we are searching for? But how will it help me to get back into my village?
Amor: You let Jesus come into your heart.
Stranger: But how?
Amor: Just ask him. That's what my grandmother said.
Stranger: You mean like, "Jesus, I really want to be good and loving and I need you in my heart to help me"? Is that the way you do it?
Amor: Yeah. That's it. That's what my grandmother said.
Stranger: But, I feel so unworthy.
Voice: That's a good start.
Amor: Who are you? And where did you come from?
Voice: I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness. I am sent by the holy one to help you in your search.
Stranger: Well, you haven't been much help so far.
Voice: Really? I thought I did quite well in sending you to Amor and taking you through the valley and across the mountaintop.
Amor: What did you mean feeling unworthy is a start?
Voice: Well, when you begin to realize that you don't have all the answers and that no matter how good you are, there is still something missing, then you have room in your heart for Jesus -- the one who is truly worthy -- the Lamb of God.
Hymn
"Into My Heart" (sing chorus twice)
The Story
Part 9
Stranger: I feel much better, but we came in search of love. Where can we find it?
Voice: What are your names?
Stranger: I am called, "Legion."
Voice: Do you know what that means?
Stranger: No.
Voice: It means, "many." There are many, many persons searching like you are searching. Like your name, the search is always there -- always with you. And what is your name?
Amor: I am called, "Amor," and I don't know, either.
Voice: Amor means "love."
Stranger: You mean love has been with us all the time?
Voice: That's right. God's love is always with you. The search is not so much finding love as it is to discover how to put it to use in your world. Learn how to let God love through you.
Stranger: What wondrous love would love me even as mean and rotten as I have been?
Amor: And me?
Hymn
"What Wondrous Love"
Benediction (Pastor)
You have found love today. Now go in peace and give it away and may the love of God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit go with you, both now and forevermore. Amen.
