Come, Let Us Worship
Prayers And Worship Aids For The Church Year
Call To Worship
Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the lands! Serve the Lord with gladness: Come into his presence with singing! Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him and bless his name!
Invocation
Our Father, you have given us so much for which to be thankful that our hearts are very glad. For your kindness to us and to all people we give praise on this day. May we live our thanks in all we do. Give us faith, wisdom, patience, and godliness, that we may live together in the spirit of love. We pray in the spirit of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Ritual Of Friendship
Let us give thanks for the warmth and support of this Christian fellowship by greeting one another with joy!
Offertory Sentences
The Lord loves a cheerful giver. So with joy and thanksgiving let us present our tithes and offerings.
Offertory Prayer
Lord, we have expressed our gratitude with our songs, and we have thanked you in our prayers. Receive now the gratitude of our gifts and prepare us to thank you through our service. Amen.
Benediction
May each of your days be a Thanksgiving Day: empty of complaints, filled with gratitude, punctuated by acts of sharing, and characterized with a smile; and the blessing of God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit be with you. Amen.
Pastoral Prayer
O God, our Father, we thank you for the gifts which you have given to us and to all humankind.
We thank you for all the beauty which you have put into the world. We thank you for the loveliness of earth and sea and sky. We thank you for great art to see, great music to hear, great books of prose and poetry to read. We thank you for all the loveliness which you have freely given to us and for all the loveliness which you have enabled the minds and hands of humans to conceive and create.
We thank you for all the nobility which you have put into the hearts of people. We thank you that you have made us able to toil, until we pass the breaking-point and do not break. We thank you that you have made us able to love, until even self is forgotten. We thank you that you have made men and women able and willing to sacrifice even life itself for those whom they hold dear. We thank you that you have made us such that somehow we cannot sin in peace, such that goodness always haunts us and sin ever brings its remorse.
We thank you for the skill which you have put into the minds of people. We thank you that you have enabled humans to harness the forces of nature and to make fertile the desert. We thank you that you have made some who have been able to find ways of defeating disease and easing pain. We thank you that you have enabled persons to conquer distance and to bring the ends of the earth close to each other.
We thank you too, O God, for the visions and the ideals which you have placed in the souls of people. We thank you for those who had the vision of freedom for all humanity; for those who to this day dream and plan and labor for a world of peace; for those who campaign and toil for a country and a world where men and women will live in good homes and work under just conditions; for those who work and pray for a world in which everyone shall know and love you from the least even unto the greatest.
We thank you for the blessings which we enjoy every day. We thank you for the friends in whose comradeship we delight. We thank you for the work whereby we earn a living, and for the strength to do it. We thank you for the homes where we have comfort, peace, and joy. We thank you for loved ones without whom life could never be the same.
Above all else we thank you for Jesus Christ, your greatest and best gift to all the world, in whom you have given us yourself and all your love.
Accept this our sacrifice of thanksgiving and praise, for your love's sake. Amen.
