Call To Worship
"Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit," Elisha said to Elijah. Is there someone you know to whom you would say these words? You are like a mentor to me. You are my spiritual hero and strength. Being near you inspires my courage. This person may live in your house or may be the subject of a favorite biography. This person might even be Jesus. In your heart now, name this person who has had so great an influence on your life -- and rejoice.
Collect
We are grateful, O God, for the guiding presence and wisdom of those you send to strengthen us on our journey. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Dear God, when we face decisions or tasks that seem beyond our capacity, let us remember the courage and determination of another. When we ask for a double or even triple share of their spirit, let our frailty of spirit diminish and our boldness increase. Amen.

Second Lesson: Galatians 5:1, 13-25
Theme: On Biting And Consuming
Call To Worship
Leader: These are the fruits of the flesh: strife, anger, envy, factions, quarrels, enmities, jealousy, carousing, dissensions, drunkenness, sorcery, fornication, idolatry, impurity, licentiousness.
People: Rotting fruits of the flesh bite into us and eat us up.
Leader: These are the fruits of the spirit: joy, love, peace, kindness, patience, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control, and generosity.
People: Ripening fruits of the spirit feed and fulfill us as we nourish those around us.
All: Let us choose fruits of the spirit.
Collect
Teach us, O God, to live within the strength of kindness, patience, and other fruits of your spirit. Show us that as we practice these choices, we can overcome anger, envy, and other damaging options that devour our lives and the lives of those around us. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Forgive us, O God, when we succumb to ever-present, destructive fruits of the flesh. Forgive us when we bite and snip at those we intend to love. Forgive us when we allow the sport of a quarrel to fuel our words and actions. Help us turn around toward the way you would have us be. Through Christ. Amen.
43C Hymns
"O Jesus, I Have Promised" or "O Savior, Precious" Tune: ANGEL'S STORY
"May I Be Bold In Faith" Tune: ST. MARTIN
"Lord, I Want To Be A Christian" Tune: I WANT TO BE A CHRISTIAN
Proper 8
Sunday between June 26 and July 2 inclusive
Gospel: Luke 9:51-62

Call To Worship
Leader: We wander.
People: We waver and stray.
Leader: We make excuses.
People: We hesitate and delay.
All:
We miss what is best until it is too late
And we have gone to our rest.
Collect
Teach us, O God, to set the face with determination and just do what we are to do. Remove the "but first let me" words that jump to our lips. Let us hear the "now" in your call to follow you. Through Christ. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Keep us, O God, from totally losing heart whenever we let you down. Encourage us to overcome the urge of weakness that turns us away from your plans for us. Lead us toward keeping our promise to follow you wherever you go. In the way of Christ. Amen.
