Series VI, Cycle C
Theme: The Passover
Call To Worship
On this night when we celebrate the Last Supper our Lord had with his disciples before his betrayal and crucifixion, we remember it was the religious festival of the Passover they were celebrating in remembrance of what the Lord had done.
As we come to the Lord's Table in remembrance of Christ's death and resurrection, let us give thanks for what the Lord has done for us.
Collect
Almighty God, even as you led your children out of Egypt and freed them from the bonds of slavery, you have freed us from the shackles of sin and led us into the promised land of new life with you. We celebrate your goodness to us as we partake of this meal at your Table. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Lord, we confess that we have often used the freedom you have given us as an excuse to do what pleases us rather than you. As we come to your Table this evening, we seek your forgiveness, and pray that as we remember all that you have done for us, we may respond with lives dedicated to doing your will. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
Almighty God, Father of us all, we bring these gifts to you that through your Church we may share with your people everywhere this festival of remembrance of all that you have done for us and your children around the world. Amen.
Hymns
"Because Thou Hast Said"
"O Crucified Redeemer"
"The Bread Of Life For All Is Broken"
Holy/Maundy Thursday
Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26
Theme: The Lord's Supper
Call To Worship
Leader: The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
People: And also with you.
Leader: Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.
People: Christ has prepared a feast of love.
All: God of all grace and steadfast love, greatly is your name to be praised in all the earth!
Collect
Almighty God, on the night before he suffered, your Son, Jesus Christ, did eat his last supper with his disciples. After they had eaten he took Bread, broke it, and gave it to his disciples. Likewise he took the Cup and after giving thanks, he gave that, too, to his disciples with the command that they should partake of this sacrament in remembrance of his death upon the cross for our salvation. We come now to do this, and we pray that we may thankfully receive the same in remembrance of him, who in these holy mysteries gives us a pledge of life eternal. Praise be to your Son, Jesus Christ, who is one with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We are not worthy, Lord, to come to your Table trusting in our own righteousness, for we have sinned by thought, word, and deed against your divine majesty. Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father, and grant that for your Son's sake, you will forgive us all that is past. May we ever hereafter serve and please you in newness of life. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
We bring these offerings, O God, as tokens of our gratitude for the gift of your Son, Jesus Christ, who died for our salvation, and was raised the third day to show us the way to eternal life. Thanks be to you, Lord. Amen.
Hymns
"For The Bread Which You Have Broken"
"O Thou Who This Mysterious Bread"
"Jesu, Jesu"
Holy/Maundy Thursday
Gospel Lesson: John 13:1-17, 31b-35
Theme: The New Commandment
Call To Worship
Friends, Christ showed us his love by becoming a humble servant. As we prepare to gather at the Lord's Table, let us resolve to show our love by serving Christ as we minister to the hungry, the sick, and all those in need whom we can help.
Collect
O Christ, as we recall how you washed the feet of your disciples, we learn how reluctant we are to serve each other. As we partake of this holy sacrament, give us grace to serve one another in all lowliness. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Lord, we know that when you partook of the Last Supper with your disciples you gave them and us a new commandment: that we should love one another and thus show the world that we are Christians. We must confess, merciful Christ, that we failed time and time again to love as you have taught us. Forgive us, we pray, and by the power of your Holy Spirit make us to be faithful and loving disciples. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
Blessed Savior, in this time of remembrance our hearts are filled with thanksgiving for your great gift of forgiveness and reconciliation. Accept these gifts, we pray, that others may come to know you and to love one another as you have commanded. Amen.
Hymns
"The King Of Love My Shepherd Is"
"How Can We Name A Love"
"Your Love, O God"
