Lectionary Worship Aids
Series V, Cycle A
First Lesson: Exodus 1:8--2:10
Theme: Unique Talents
Call To Worship
Today we celebrate the lives of two Hebrew midwives, Shiphrah and Puah. We lift up with joy the mother of Moses and his sister, Miriam. Come, let us cheer the cleverness of all who survive under the weight of injustice and persecution.
Collect
For the shrewdness of mind you have given the oppressed Israelites of long ago and those not so long ago, O God, we praise you. For the capacity of Israelite women to meet cunning with equal ingenuity while surviving injustice, we praise you. For the ability to use our talents to overcome adversity, we praise your holy name. Amen.

Second Lesson: Romans 12:1-8
Theme: Diversity
Call To Worship
Let us worship God by honoring the diversity of talents among us. Let us worship God by using our abilities in ways that are holy and acceptable to God. Let us worship God in the offering of ourselves to fulfill God's will for us in this world. Amen.
Collect
In your design of creation, O God, you have filled the human pallet with boundless varieties of ability. Grant us increasing acumen to identify and admit to our talents. Grant us the energy of challenge to use these gifts wisely and in ways acceptable to you. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We suppose, dear God, that we will last forever. We take for granted that valued talents will extend lifelong. Lessen our disappointment when life accidents change our bodies and other circumstances abort the use of cherished abilities. Help us to avoid squandering our gifts while we own them. Help us to discern and cultivate previously unrecognized talents as our situations change. Amen.
51A Hymns
"Breathe On Me, Breath Of God" Tune: TRENTHAM
"We Are The Church" Tune: PORT JERVIS
"Forward Through The Ages" Tune: ST. GERTRUDE
Proper 16
Sunday between August 21 and August 27 inclusive
Gospel: Matthew 16:13-20
Theme: Dare To Proclaim
Call To Worship
Come worship and be joyful. We recognize that Jesus is the Son of the living God. Christ is risen. The Holy Spirit is with us today and every day, here and everywhere. Come worship, people of God, and be joyful.
Collect
For the gift of inner hearing and seeing that Jesus is the Messiah and that we are the church, we give you thanks, O God. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Like Peter, we confess that we believe in Jesus. We whisper our confession lest others think we are silly or outmoded or showing off. We speak our confession to our inner selves and profess our belief with the mechanical, unison voice of a worship time affirmation. Let us look Jesus in the eye, as Peter must have, and declare beyond secret with his firm and steady voice, "You, Jesus, are the Messiah, the Son of the living God." Hear our words, O God. Amen.
51A Hymns
"O God, We Praise Thee, And Confess" Tune: TALLIS' ORDINAL
"[Incarnate God][Strong Son Of God], Immortal Love" Tune: ROCKINGHAM
"Hail To The Lord's Anointed" Tune: ROCKPORT
