Lectionary Worship Aids
Series V, Cycle A
First Lesson: Isaiah 49:8-16a
Theme: I Will Not Forget You
Call To Worship
Sing for joy, O heavens, and exult, O earth; break forth, O mountains, into singing! For God has comforted God's people, and God will have compassion on the suffering ones. Sing for joy, O people, for God will not forget you.
Collect
God has kept us. God has not thrown us away. Furthermore, from paths to highways, God has made all kinds of roads to guide us through the mountainous ranges of our lives. God remembers us. Be joyful before almighty God. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Almighty God, who has written our names on the palm of your hand, we put our trust in you. Those dark moments we believe you have forgotten us, remind us that you are on our side forever. Amen.
16A Hymns
"O Be Joyful In The Lord" Tune: FINLAY or ROCK OF AGES
"How Gentle God's Commands" Tune: DENNIS
"Be [Calm][Still], My Soul" Tune: FINLANDIA
Eighth Sunday After Epiphany
Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 4:1-5
Theme: God's Commendation
Call To Worship
Commendation from God is God's approval, endorsement, and praise. We, who are trying to be trustworthy Christians, will receive commendation from God. God will reveal the purposes of our hearts in God's time. So forget about the judgment others pass on us now. It is God whose opinion counts.
Collect
If God will vouch for our good efforts even after bringing to our attention the bad news about our lives, then we indeed should feel encouraged to keep trying at this life as a Christian. For Jesus' sake. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
You tell us not even to judge ourselves, dear God. That is difficult because we are prone to err. Remind us of the freedom we know when we live first from the base of your affirmation. Remind us of how little energy we waste when we pay attention to the clean purposes of our hearts. In Jesus' name. Amen.
16A Hymns
"O Day Of God, Draw Nigh" Tune: ST. MICHAEL
"How Like A Gentle Spirit" Tune: SURSUM CORDA
"Take My Life [God,][And] Let It Be" Tune: VIENNA
Eighth Sunday After Epiphany
Gospel: Matthew 6:24-34
Theme: As Birds Of The Air
Call To Worship
Over-wintering cardinals put spirit into February existence. Their exuberant song cannot wait for dawn to spill into the air. Trusting, they seem not to worry but go actively and fully about the tasks of their day. At dusk, their last act, of course, is the creation of another song. Consider God's provision for the birds of the air and rejoice in God's care of us.
Collect
You know what we need, Holy Parent, even before we do. You provide for the nourishment of our lives, almost before we have noticed. So let the warbling of our souls find voice. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Let us lay aside fretting and use our energy for sustaining and constructive matters such as unreserved singing within our souls. Amen.
16A Hymns
"[Be Not Dismayed][God Will Take Care Of You]" Tune: MARTIN
"Thus Far You Have Led Us" Tune: KREMSER
"Holy Spirit, [Light][Truth] Divine" Tune: CANTERBURY
