The biblical story of human creation is rich with meaning and
symbolism. When the newly formed woman is called a "helper," that
comes from the Hebrew word that's used to refer to God as Savior,
as when the psalmist says, "God is a very present 'Help' in time
of trouble." (30:10) The symbol then, is that the female is
created to "save" the male from aloneness: "It is not good that
the man should be alone." (Genesis 2:18) Men and women save each
other from aloneness. Bone of each other's bone, flesh of each
other's flesh, we are at once different and the same, and created
in a manner that requires relationship. When we live with pain in
our souls, typically males and females seek to require
subservience of the opposite sex. When we live as God intended in
creation, female and male, we are interdependent sources of
loving comfort and security for one another.
