Christmastide, the Season of the Nativity
Lectionary Worship Workbook
Planning Ideas And Resources For The Entire Church Year
The most popular of all the Christian festivals is the season of Christmas. Its removal would create a tremendous vacuum in our religious and cultural life. The name itself, a contraction of the phrase, "Christ Mass," did not become general until the 12th Century, although other earlier designations, such as the Feast of the Nativity, did appear.
It may contain either one of two Sundays, depending on the day of the week upon which Christmas falls. Its message focuses on the word, "incarnation," which comes from the Latin came (flesh) and of Immanuel (God with us).
