FIFTEEN READY-TO-USE SPECIAL OCCASION WORSHIP SERVICES FROM CHRISTIAN HISTORY AND TRADITION
Background
This service pre-dates the pilgrim fathers by about thirty years, but it gives the flavor of many of their beliefs and emphasis in worship. In the 1570s Thomas Cartwright, a professor at Cambridge, revitalized the Puritan movement. Through appeals to Parliament and the writing of tracts or pamphlets, the Puritans attacked the Anglican liturgy, assailed the bishops for their pomp and high living, and pointed out the ignorance of the establishment clergy. The Puritans created "prophesying," a form of class meeting for biblical discussion.
