Love your neighbor as yourself

LECTIONARY WORSHIP AIDS
Call to Worship
Pastor:
We are the children of God; and as his children we are to love one another.
People:
We deny God as our Father when we are unkind or unfair to each other.
Pastor:
Therefore we are commanded by God to love our neighbors as ourselves.
People:
May our attitude in society prove we are children of God.
Collect
Gracious Father, whose nature to love is a basic requirement for those who would be your children: Empty our hearts of bitterness, jealousy, and vengeance; that we may give to society the example of brotherly love. In our Savior's name we pray. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
We need people to be our neighbors, Father. But we are guilty of many unneighborly acts of injustice; and we carelessly violate their right to depend on us as neighbors. Forgive us for pretending to love when we use people to our advantage, and then mistreat them when they displease us. Give us the desire to express genuine love and concern for one another as you have commanded. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
Hymns
"At Length There Dawns the Glorious Day"
"O Brother Man, Fold to Thy Heart"
"These Things Shall Be"
"Where Cross the Crowded Ways of Life"
EIGHTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY
Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 4:1-5
Theme:
Our faith does not make us judge of others
Call to Worship
Pastor:
When we surrender our lives to Christ, the assurance of salvation fills us with joy.
People:
It is the most wonderful experience! We wish everyone could enjoy it.
Pastor:
Christ gives himself in different ways to different people, and therefore cautions us not to judge the Christian experience of others.
People:
There is one Christ, one church. May our experience with Christ preserve that unity.
Collect
O Holy God, whose church is made of many different personalities who have had different experiences with Christ: Give us understanding hearts; that we may work in harmony, instead of judging the Christian witness of others. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
We enjoy Christian fellowship, Father; but we are too biased as to whom we include in our fellowship. We become critical of some who call themselves Christians, who do not seem to be true to the faith according to our experience. Forgive us for our judgmental attitude toward them. Help us to fellowship in Christian love with them, leaving all judgment in the hands of Christ, through whom we pray. Amen.
Hymns
"Christ Is Made the Sure Foundation"
"O Church of God, United"
"O Day of God, Draw Nigh"
"The Church's One Foundation"
EIGHTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EP1PHANY
Gospel:
Matthew 5:38-48
Theme:
Love your enemies
Call to Worship
Pastor:
Jesus added to the teaching of the Old Testament, saying we must love not only our friends, but even our enemies.
People:
Many people who are not Christians love their friends; but Jesus expects us to go farther than that in giving our love.
Pastor:
That is the way God loves us. He wants his children to love in the same way.
People:
May God help us to be more loving toward those who do not love us.
Collect
O loving Father, who has demonstrated your love in Christ, and has instructed us to love even our enemies: Melt the hardness of our hearts which keeps us from loving those who do not love us; that we may truly become your children. In our Savior's name we pray. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
We follow the way of the world so easily, Father. And our circle of friends grows smaller. Forgive us when we have not reached out in love to all persons, even those who would be our enemies. Help us better to understand your love for us, that we may become more free in sharing our love with others. We pray in the name of Christ our Lord. Amen.
Hymns
"Christ for the World We Sing"
"Lift Up Our Hearts, O King of Kings"
"O Young and Fearless Prophet"
"Rise Up, O Men of God"
