Call To Worship
Leader: By what qualities do we measure a friendship as strong as lions?
People: Persons who stand by each other during rough times.
Leader: Persons who can speak to each other without censor.
People: Persons who support each other as they undertake adventures.
Leader: Persons who are dependable, trustworthy, and loyal.
All: Persons who accept each other for who they are.
Collect
You, O God, who lifts the cloud of night in our lives, are as a friend to us. We are grateful that we can speak freely to you without sending you away. We are thankful that we can count on your relationship to us as enduring, and that you wish well for us. In the name of Jesus the Christ. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We limit our friendships, O God, when we neglect their give-and-take nature. When we focus on our own goals, we restrict the fullness of communion possible within a friendship. Help us to reach beyond ourselves as we grow deeper friendships. In the spirit of Christ. Amen.
43B Hymns
"There Is A Balm In Gilead" Tune: BALM
"As Pants The Hart For Cooling Streams" or "As The Hart Longs" Tune: MARTYRDOM or AVON
"I Will Lift The Cloud Of Night" Tune: JONES
Proper 8
Sunday between June 26 and July 2 inclusive
Second Lesson: 2 Corinthians 8:7-15
Theme: Slim Pickings
Call To Worship
God calls us to do our part by being givers according to the money, things, and talents that we have. God is the source of encouragement that empowers us to finish with enthusiasm what we have begun.
Collect
We want our ventures to reflect our desire to be better Christians. We want to be more loving, more giving, and more like Jesus. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
What can we do, O God, those times we sense the plethora of need yet are caught in droopy enthusiasm? Help us accept that abundance of spirit fluctuates and needs our patience just as our tangible resources at times slip into a spell of slim pickings. Help us to continue stretching our soul, our talents, and our resources. If we are in earnest, what we offer will be acceptable to you. For the sake of Jesus. Amen.
43B Hymns
"Lord, I Want To Be A Christian" Tune: I WANT TO BE A CHRISTIAN
"Breathe On Me, Breath Of God" Tune: TRENTHAM
"Awake, My Soul, Stretch Every Nerve" Tune: CHRISTMAS
Proper 8
Sunday between June 26 and July 2 inclusive
Gospel: Mark 5:21-43
Theme: Life Wish
Call To Worship
Leader: What is it about the life wish that leads us to do what we ordinarily would not or could not do?
People: Is it desperation or hope that brings us to the miracle of restoration?
Leader: Can we save ourselves, or must someone intercede for us?
People: Must we become partners with God in order to make it through life and to thrive?
Leader: We come with many questions because living life fully is our goal, but living fully is exacting.
Collect
You, O God, are the source of the life wish that wells within us. You empower us with the hope that we are worthy of life. Through the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We need the comfort and assurance of your leading us on, O God. We admit that we are weak, that we are weary and worn down by the pressures of daily living, from the frailties of body and spirit, and from asking ourselves to do less or more than we are able. Because our independence is not omnipotent, we need your help to come through the temporary times of feeling our vitality nearly depleted. Amen.
43B Hymns
"Tell Me The Stories Of Jesus" Tune: STORIES OF JESUS
"There Was Jesus By The Water" Tune: TALITHA CUM
"Precious Lord, Take My Hand" Tune: PRECIOUS LORD
