Call To Worship
Know that God is a supportive, listening God who cares about our smallest needs. Know that God hears us and knows how to sustain us. Come, let us worship.
Collect
Teach us your way of caring, O God, so we might become good listeners and encouragers of those who would speak to us. Teach us when to be silent. Guide our responses toward a helpful manner when we are the confronted ones. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Many conversations begin with a moan of complaint, dear God. Help us to hear the plea of a weary person for a sustaining word and to avoid answering with our own litany of grievances. Help us to respond with the tongue of a teacher, to speak an encouraging word. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
25B Hymns
"Come, Teach Us, Spirit of Our God" Tune: MURRAY
"Teach Me, My God And King" or "Teach Me, O Lord, Your Holy Way" or "Teach Me Thy Way, O Lord" Tune: ROCKINGHAM or MORNINGTON
"Unto The Hills We Lift Our Longing Eyes" Tune: SANDON
Sunday Of The Passion (Sixth Sunday In Lent)
Second Lesson: Philippians 2:5-11
Theme: Empty
Call To Worship
Self-aggrandizement, thoughts of defining his legacy, enhancing his reputation, an air of self-importance -- all these I-centered attitudes were absent from Jesus the day of Jesus' ride through Jerusalem. Laying aside any wishes for himself, Jesus emptied himself on this day of fullness. God lifted him up. Those who followed him gave him majesty and hosannas. Come, let us sing our hosannas to the Savior.
Collect
Teach us in a quiet manner to live the truth that we are your children, O holy Parent. Let us leave any glorifying to you. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We become so busy conveying an image of ourselves in our work, to our children, or to our friends, Gracious God, that we forget the telling of our story comes best from the perception of others. Help us to lay aside our own agendas for the sake of bettering the world around us and to let our story tell itself. For the sake of Jesus. Amen.
25B Hymns
"Hosanna, Loud Hosanna" Tune: ELLACOMBE
"Tell Me The [Stories][Story] Of Jesus" Tune: STORIES
"O Love, How Vast, How Flowing Free" or "O Love, How Deep, How Broad, How High" Tune: DEO GRACIAS OR "O The Deep, Deep Love Of Jesus" Tune: BUNESSAN or EBENEZER
Sunday Of The Passion (Sixth Sunday In Lent)
Gospel: Mark 14:1--15:47 or Mark 15:1-39 (40-47)
Theme: Temporary
Call To Worship
On the final Sunday in Lent, we consider the price of Jesus' sacrifice. Let us ponder what we have to offer as well as the ways in which we honor and give tribute to God and to those who are special in our lives.
Collect
The woman who anointed Jesus with the expensive ointment of fragrant nard reminds us not to wait too long to honor those whom you give us temporarily, O God. With investments of long-term loans, college bills, and mortgages on our minds, we scrimp and overlook the significance of a here-and-now gift. Help us discern when an act is more important than its cost. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
In these days of wanting immediate gratification, we confuse the wasted luxury of living too much for the moment with a well-timed extravagance. Teach us, O God, to weigh the moment so we might discern when the time is appropriate for spending what we can ill afford. Amen.
25B Hymns
"Ride On! Ride On In Majesty" Tune: ST. DROSTANE, THE KING'S MAJESTY, or WINCHESTER NEW
"A Woman Came Who Did Not Count The Cost" Tune: WEXFORD CAROL
"All Glory, Laud, And Honor" Tune: ST. THEODULPH
