Twin sisters lived together, after their parents died, in the family home. They were
involved in an accident, during which one sister was injured. This happened in the
summer of their 28th birthday. This accident caused one sister to be confined to a
wheelchair, while the other sister worked. The injured sister was unkind to her sister and
would demand things that often hurt the uninjured sister. She often reminded her injured
sister that she was the one that caused her to be so miserable. Together they grew old, but
continued to live in the same house.
One of the things that the wheelchair-bound sister insisted upon was that her sister take her on Wednesday nights to a healing service at the Episcopal church. More often than not, the injured one would ask for prayers for her discomfort and limited life. If someone new came to the service, she would always share how she was injured and how her sister played a part in it.
One night, at one of these services, the Spirit of God moved on the feeble sister and she stood up, praising God for his healing power. Everyone was shocked and thrilled at the miracle they were witnessing. Then, within moments, she began to cry and told everyone that she could not live another lie. She was not healed because she said she had never really been hurt. She looked at her sister and fell on her knees, begging her forgiveness for the bad treatment she had done to her. She was so afraid that her sister would marry and leave her alone that she had pretended to be injured after the accident and she and could never figure out how to end the charade.
The small gathering of people moved to the side of the sister who had taken the abuse for all those years. They wanted to tell her what to do, how to get even, and even suggested that the other sister should be permanently banished from the church. But she saw a greater miracle in the fact that her sister changed before her very eyes and she reached out and held her and then led her out of the chapel and lovingly walked her home. It was a forgiving night for everyone as they enjoyed the presence of a forgiving God and a learned disciple.
