There was a time, not so long ago, when the communist governments of Eastern Europe thought they had achieved ultimate security. Those totalitarian regimes exercised controls over their citizenry unprecedented in human history. Not only were the police forces and the armies in the hands of the ruling party, but the news media, the publishing houses, and the universities, as well. Every base had been covered (or so the party members thought). Every chink in the dam had been filled.
