There is more integrity in the generous gift of a poor person than in the token contribution of someone well-fixed. But those with means are frequently about the business, for whatever reason, of faking integrity.
Alfred Hitchcock, the famous director of scary films, worked with actress Ingrid Bergman when her career was taking off. Bergman was uncomfortable about the way Hitchcock had asked her to play a certain scene.
"I don't think I can do that naturally," she told him, and went on to tell him about the difficulty she was feeling and to suggest some possible alternative approaches.
Hitchcock listened solemnly, nodding from time to time. Bergman was pretty sure she had won him over, until he declared, "All right, if you can't do it naturally, then fake it!"
