The Hebrews passage is a contrast between the old and the new. The writer points out the difference between the giving of the law on Mount Sinai and the new covenant of which Jesus is the mediator. It is a reminder of the contrasts in the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi between: hatred and love, injury and pardon, doubt and faith, despair and hope, darkness and light, and sadness and joy.
