Former Methodist Bishop Gerald Kennedy...

Former Methodist Bishop Gerald Kennedy mentions moving to a new location as a pastor in his early days of ministry. He felt discouraged right from the beginning. The smog of the metropolitan area depressed him. He was lonely and homesick for his former parish.
One day an old friend called him to see how he was doing. Kennedy was in the mood to complain and feel sorry for himself. His friend listened to him, and then his friend began to point out the possibilities in his new setting. He painted a picture of genuine hope. When his friend finished, Kennedy said to him in his parting words: "You make me feel a little bit better. I will stay until noon."
Later Kennedy was to say: "That was the last time I ever felt quite so low about my job and I learned a lesson. Can I make it until noon? If I can I will go that far at least before I quit."
Could this be what the Apostle Paul had in mind when he admonished Timothy: "Fight the good fight of faith"? Young pastors especially need words of encouragement as they face situations that seem like deadends. How fortunate the diffident but sincere Timothy had a mentor like Paul to motivate him in his time of need.
