Long before the time...

Long before the time of Christ, the great philosopher Plato knew the spiritual powers of music. For he observed, “Music and rhythm find their way into the secret places of the soul.”
And long before the time of Christ, the servants of King Saul knew of musk's powers also. They sensed how it could penetrate and lift the soul. Was Saul manic-depressive? Was Saul
schizophrenic? The Bible doesn't make a modern-day diagnosis.
Instead, it says that Saul was period. ically tormented by an evil spirit. To alleviate his suffering, they prescribed something better than chemical mood elevators and tranquilizers. The rippling harp music played by a young man named David soothed his soul and lifted his black, despairing moods.
So, too, the great hymns of the church and the great chords of a pipe organ find their ways into the secret places of our souls. They help us to believe in the things of the Spirit and the reality and presence of God.
