My oldest daughter joined the Marine Corps when she was eighteen. She went to boot camp for training in Parris Island, South Carolina. At one point in basic training, falsely accused of an incident, and appalled at the injustice of the system, she wanted out. She wrote to me, “Mommy, get me out of here. Call everybody you know, even the President of the United States if you have to. Just get me out of here.”
Her need was great. She had confidence in me. Did she really believe that I had the kind of clout that would get an audience with the President of the United States?
Like my daughter, whatever our need, we want the best resource possible to meet that need. Often, we must rely on someone wiser than we are to tell us just what the best is.
God gave his best for us — the perfect sacrifice. At one time, the high priest entered the Holy of Holies, offering the blood of bulls and goats for the sins of God's people. This he did on high and holy days. Then God gave, once for all, the One for the many — Jesus Christ, The High Priest of the highest order — who shed his own blood, “securing an eternal redemption.”
