When Professor John Dumitru of the Social Sciences department, Foothill College, Los Altos Hills, California, returned from a sabbatical in Pakistan he made the following comment:
“Pakistan is a male-dominated culture in the process of 'Islamization' which means many government restrictions such as no alcoholic drinks, no male-female dancing, no dating before marriage, and severe public punishment for transgressors.”
In the name of religion, altruism, and morality we can easily slip into the role of oppressor. We can preach a gospel that requires everyone to believe what we believe, to live the lifestyle that we live, to accept our superiority and authority.
But second Corinthians reminds us that we do not preach ourselves! The Gospel of Jesus Christ does not seek to confine people within narrow, human limits. It reminds us of the frailty of “earthen vessels.” The Gospels of Jesus Christ calls us to give and love and serve, not to demand and take and oppress. The Gospel makes us less restrictive and more open.
