Officials of a small town in New York State reported that a man who had won more than one million dollars in the state's Lotto game had been arrested for stealing more than $6,000 from his sister's convenience store. She left him in charge of her store while she went on vacation and he took advantage of her absence to tinker with the computerized cash register so it would eliminate half the day's receipts.
The lotto game was $1,001,942. One would think his annual payment of $44,222 for twenty years would have been enough to satisfy his need and greed for money.
But it wasn't. Even his sister fell victim to his greed. The writer to the Colossians was right when he described human beings as being "dead in trespasses."
Nothing less than a divine miracle is required to raise us up from this death to the new life in Christ. Our trespasses have been forgiven and the bond against us has been cancelled, "nailing it to the cross." Without the life and work of Jesus Christ there would be no hope for human beings, who are "dead in trespasses."
