When we speak of God's peace, we often forget that it has boundaries. Isaiah speaks of God's yearning to bring peace and healing to his people. Yet God's acceptance is far from “Anything goes.” God will plow down obstacles, put away anger, seek the good of the people. But there is a price and there are limits. God will heal us in spite of our past, but there is a cost. God's peace demands that we turn, and turn our hearts to him. From a harsh, judgmental Christianity we have turned to a new appreciation of the grace and forgiveness of God, but we can turn too far. We should not expect that God's grace, though freely given, expects nothing from us. There is no costless Christian ity; there is only costly discipleship, offering healing and peace to those who will pay the price.
