During a meeting of 200 top military leaders at the National War College, a speaker said, "The greatest challenge to all that we do now comes from within the churches." The man who was speaking was a high-ranking general. He went on to say, "A whole new way of thinking has developed in the churches, and we have to know what to do with it."
The power of the Christian conscience can be seen virtually everywhere. In Latin America, bishops and priests have been jailed or murdered over matters of conscience; many have disappeared. In Russia, both Christians and Jews are suffering. In South Africa, Nobel Peace Prize winner, Bishop Desmond Tutu, has a large following called a "confessing church" as he leads the struggle against apartheid. In Europe, many peace groups struggle against the nuclear threat.
Many do not agree with these people. Some will even label them traitors. But no one can doubt the sincerity of their witness and their dedication to principles of conscience, as they understand it.
Like the apostles in Acts five, they are paying the price of their civil disobedience. They are saying, "We must obey God rather than men."
