The story is told of a little boy who accidentally swallowed a coin. The mother, who was frantic, said, "Hurry up and do something. Call the doctor." To this the father replied, "I've got a better idea. I'll call the preacher. He can get money out of anyone."
One thing you can say about Paul: he didn't preach to "get money out of" people. "What then is my reward?" Paul asks. "Just this: that in my preaching I may make the gospel free of charge." He is emphasizing the point that salvation is a free gift of God's grace in Jesus Christ. That is the gospel or "good news" he has been called to preach.
There is no record in the Bible of Jesus' giving anyone money. Instead he gave compassion, forgiveness, healing, instruction, and salvation. And he never charged a fee. The good news of God's grace is that it is a free gift. We can never buy it; we can only respond to it. God's concern for what is inside a person doesn't mean any money he may have swallowed.
