The minister was talking to a group of young people ranging in age twelve through high school. "The rainbow," he said, "Is a myriad of colors, and it symbolizes a covenant between man and God. God told Noah he would never destroy all flesh from off the earth by water again."
Then he took from his pocket a wire hoop and a small bottle that contained soapy water. Dipping the hoop into the soapy water, he began to blow bubbles into the air. The bubbles floated everywhere as the young people tried to grab them.
Then he continued, "In the sunshine all the colors of the rainbow are reflected from these bubbles, and you have a desire to play with them because of their beauty, but when you touch them they burst and only a stain on your hand is left." He paused, as if to let those words sink in, then said, "Sin is like the bubbles, it is beautiful and desirable, but when you partake of it, the bubbles burst, and the beauty disappears, and only the stain of sin remains."
Should we be seeing in the rainbow's elusive colors a remainder of our sin as well as God's good protection?
