John of Ephesus is, according to tradition, the author of three little gems, 1 John, 2 John, and 3 John, found tucked away in the pages of the New Testament. The doughty disciple served this key church for many years. It was said he would often tell his congregation he had but one message for them: "Little children, love one another."
As a parish pastor, I have used the words of 1 Corinthians 13:1-3, the love hymn in every wedding service I have conducted. I have used it to celebrate the marriage of teenagers about to explore together the years of parenthood, and venturing into the market place following completion of college. I have uttered the words from this precious hymn to tie the knot uniting two elderly folks forsaking loneliness and sharing what time God has given them together. I have spoken these words at my sister's wedding and had them inscribed in the bulletin of my own wedding service several years ago.
Love is not simply at the heart of marriage, not simply at the heart of the living church, but is the gospel of Christ put into action. Love is a verb which is made visible when we give it away and share it with others. My advise to married folk and single people is the same as stated by John of Ephesus, "Little children, love one another." Love is the gospel. Love is as ageless as the Father God and as new as the dew of dawn.
