Our text is the story of the death of Moses. The Deuteronomist observes "there has not arisen a prophet since in Israel like Moses;" and there is none like him" in "signs and wonders" done by the Lord through him.
This tribute to Moses reminds me of someone's truism: "If my life doesn't speak for me, I have nothing to say." That was true of Moses in the most positive way. Whether that is true of us in an unflattering sense each must decide for self. What was said after Moses' death was the true measure of the man. So was what was said (A.P 8/18/84, Glen Falls, N.Y. "Post Star") about (Massachusetts) Hampshire County's sheriff by inmates: "We love him and he will always be in our hearts," inmates wrote to the sheriff's widow. "He didn't consider us inmates," said one prisoner. "He considered us people. We loved him like the grandfather we never had. It's that simple."
What will be said about you and me after our physical bodies perish? Will we, like Moses and Sheriff John Boyle, be remembered with praise and love? Think about it!
