B.P. Gore said in verse nine, "lay hid all that is essential to the Christian creed. The Lordship of Christ Jesus in a sense implies His Divinity, His Resurrection, and His triumph over death, and in St. Paul's time was already a matter of public confession."
The message of all the evangelists who have ever lived is summed up in their belief in Jesus as Lord. "Jesus Christ is Lord." One day every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord. (Philippians 2:11) It is the test of salvation to confess it. (Romans 10:9) It is by the Holy Spirit that a man is even able to say Jesus is Lord. (1 Corinthians 12:3) The apostle of Love preaches not himself but Jesus Christ as Lord. (2 Corinthians 4:5) There is one Lord. (1 Corinthians 8:6)
Today we have lost the sense of the meaning of Lord. It's not a glib phrase. Lord is more than a token of respect as "sir," or form of address to an elder, or master, or owner; it means the absolute and undisputed owner of a person ... the head of the family, and our guardian. We are his slaves, we are his possessions. The Old Testament uses the term for God. The Jesus Prayer has the proper priority: "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior, have mercy on me a sinner.
