It's been almost twenty years ago but I still vividly remember traveling through the Rocky Mountains about nine o'clock one summer morning. There was a camper nearly hidden in the trees and its occupants were enjoying their just cooked breakfast around a picnic table. A slight breeze carried the aroma of bacon through the mountain trees. A friend and I were driving very slowly and we both deeply appreciated the captivating scene. It instilled in us a sense of well-being and a longing to remain in these peaceful surroundings.
When the apostles were caught up in the beauty of Jesus on the mountaintop, they wanted to build and stay. Jesus, however, told them as he tells us, we cannot continually live "on a high." We must come back down the mountain to the noises and frustrations of daily living. Suffering and death he knew would await him, yet he had to return and face it.
We, fortunately, all have some "highs" now and then which are helpful to remember and anticipate when life at the bottom of the mountain becomes difficult to face.
