It is said there was once a time when a handshake would seal a promise. If a man wanted to buy a horse from another man and they shook on it, then the bargain was agreed upon. As our children remind us "a promise is a promise." Those of you who have ever broken one of these promises know the pain it causes those we love.
My daughter has made me promise to take her to Show Biz Pizza Place before we move. We are moving to another congregation in another couple of months. We still haven't done it. What is the problem, you ask? Well, it's money. At Show Biz, the kids not only eat pizza but they spend money on video games. An average evening costs at least thirty dollars. Remarking on this to my wife, she said: "Well you just found the money to buy a book you wanted that cost that much!" She's right. A promise is a promise.
Jesus Christ has promised us if we pray and call upon his name, we will receive that for which we ask. (John 14:13, 14) What a promise!
