This entire reading stirs in the mind a picture of a giant spiritual Statue of Liberty. There will be a gathering of people from many nations. Jerusalem -- city of promise, hope, and peace; city of justice and freedom -- will be the clustering place where all might find spiritual refuge and care.
The words of Emma Lazarus, emblazoned in bronze on the Statue of Liberty on Bedloe Island in New York harbor, come to mind, "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breath free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost, to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
