They ought always to pray...

"They ought always to pray and never lose heart." For many years I have received a Christmas letter from a church of South India pastor by the name of Sam Devapragasam. Sam is a praying person. He prays as naturally as he breathes. He believes that prayer works.
In one letter he told of an Indian doctor, training in England, who fell seriously ill and was given only a few days to live. Sam and his friends would not accept the sentence of death. They prayed unceasingly for the doctor's recovery. When the young man's mother flew to England to be at his side, she was upheld by the prayers of people all over the world, including the pope of Rome. Within two weeks, her son regained his health and, within a year, was back at work.
As I read Sam's letter, I thought we must forgive him for being behind the times. Apparently no one has told him that a lot of Christians don't pray anymore, and don't believe that persistent prayer changes the course of history!
