In verse 9 of this reading, the people of Judah sing, "At night I long for you with all my heart ..." Darkness and eventide have a special way of causing the soul to focus on things eternal. It is also at night when we are moved to think about our loved ones now absent. They dwell in the safety of eternal lodging. So in the nighttime we often make commitments anew to serve the Lord, to trust him more dearly, to live more faithfully in his service. Let us keep our nighttime promises. Let us rejoice in our evening visions of those who sing the heavenly song with all the saints.
On this All Saints' Day we may fittingly pray the famous prayer that was a favorite of Cardinal Newman, "O Lord, support us all the day long of this troublous life, until the shadows lengthen, and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over and our work is done. Then, Lord, in thy mercy, grant us a safe lodging, a holy rest, and peace at the last; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen."
