All Saints' Day is a time for Christians to remember, with love and appreciation, loved ones who are now in heaven. The early church celebrated this special day on May 13. The date was changed by Pope Gregory III in the eighth century, when he dedicated a chapel in the basilica of St. Peter's in Rome to "all the saints." This dedication occurred on November 1.
Certainly the Sermon on the Mount was delivered by Jesus to all his saints -- all his followers who seek to do his will in the world, based upon his ethics and gospel love. Clarence Jordan says of the beatitudes, which begin this greatest of all sermons ever preached:
The ... Beatitudes ... are the steps into the kingdom, the stairway to spiritual life. They are not disconnected, isolated "sayings' but a definite whole with each step, or Beatitude, arranged progressively and in order ... these are not blessings pronounced upon different kinds of people ... Rather, they are stages in the experience of only one class of people -- those who are entering the kingdom and who at each stage are blessed.
On this All Saints' Sunday we need to reaffirm our allegiance to the Christ we serve. The saints on earth and the saints in heaven are cheering us on to spiritual victory!
