A seed planted in the...
Illustration
A seed planted in the ground "dies" to all intents and purposes. It gives up all the life that is imbedded in it so that something new and different can arise. What comes from the seed will not look at all like the seed that was planted. One could never even in one's wildest imaginations guess what the plant would look like after it had sprouted simply by looking at the seed. Only in its being planted will it give forth what lies imbedded within it, dying so that it may live.
The text uses this picture without using the image of the seed itself. "Put to death therefore what is earthly to you ..." Until you "put off the old nature with its practices" you cannot be "raised with Christ [to] seek the things that are above" and thus "put on the new nature which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its Creator."
Like seeds dying to live, Christians daily die to death and rise to life.
