In a tourist area, a working potter with a wheel can gather a crowd anytime. It is fascinating to watch a vase or pot emerge up from the spinning wheel, molded by the deft hands of the potter. Sometimes there is a mistake or an imperfection in the material. The clay is simply thrown back into the mix to be "recycled" and again brought to the wheel. Jeremiah knew this process from the marketplaces of cities of his time and saw in it a parable for God's work with the chosen people. Because they were chosen, God's will shall be done through and in them no matter what they do. That may seem to deny human choice or freedom, but that is how Jeremiah saw it.
Leslie Weatherhead picked up the same theme and compared the will of God to a mountain stream that begins high in the mountains and may be redirected, dammed up, or siphoned off in irrigation, but ultimately the stream reaches the river and the river reaches the eternal ocean. Thus Weatherhead describes the original, consequent, and ultimate will of the Great Potter.
