Riches are the least worthy gifts which God can give man, yet men toil for them day and night, and take no rest. Therefore God frequently gives riches to foolish people, to whom He gives nothing else.

In these comments the reformer echoes one of the more troublesome aspects of the realm of faith --an uneasiness with material things or wealth or comfort. Stated positively, in the Judeo-Christian tradition people are called to responsibility and caring for others; we are expected on religious grounds to leave the world and others better for our having been here on earth!
While we may not be able to do everything and while we are also to enjoy life, the key is at the end of the "woes;" to enjoy all these things brings woe if they are "not grieved over the ruin of Joseph!"
In this sense the effect of social service is found in such figures as Disraeli who said, "Justice is truth in action," or Lincoln as he declared, "In giving freedom to the slave, we assure freedom to the free ..."
